Mapping the Journey: Using Formative Assessment to Become a Community of Learning

In the minds of many students and teachers, assessment still means “test.” Electronic assessment tools can go beyond that definition to allow information and data to flow to the teacher, the student and ultimately to the entire class.  If our ultimate goal is to have students become responsible for driving their own learning, then we should share as much formative data as possible so that they can make enlightened choices about their learning. In the process, we can change our view of formative assessment from a momentary classroom event into an information rich environment.
